Until a few years ago, talking about gut health meant primarily talking about digestion.

Each person has a different microbiota which is influenced by numerous factors:

  • diet;
  • age;
  • environment;
  • medications;
  • physical activity;
  • stress;
  • quality and regularity of sleep.

When this ecosystem maintains a good balance and sufficient diversity, it contributes to numerous functions of the body.

On the contrary, significant alterations in the composition and activity of the microbiota can be associated with gastrointestinal and metabolic disorders and are today the subject of growing interest also in the field of psychophysical well-being.

The gut is often referred to as the “second brain”.

A large part of the serotonin present in the body is produced in the gut, mainly by enterochromaffin cells.

The relationship between the microbiota and the brain is complex, however: it is not simply the serotonin produced in the gut that directly reaches the brain.

Gut microorganisms can instead influence metabolites, precursors, immune signals, and nerve pathways involved in gut-brain communication.

This is one of the reasons why research is studying with growing interest the relationship between microbiota, stress, behavior, and mental well-being.

The microbiota also participates in the transformation of nutrients and the production of biologically active substances.

Among these are short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), produced by the fermentation of dietary fibers and important for the health of the gut environment.

Particular scientific interest is also directed at certain microorganisms such as Akkermansia muciniphila, associated with gut barrier health and studied for its possible role in metabolism and insulin sensitivity.

The composition of the microbiota, however, does not depend on a single bacterium: it is the overall balance of the ecosystem that is important.

How to support Gut Health daily

There is no single food or supplement capable of “repairing” the microbiota.

Taking care of it means rather creating, day after day, favorable conditions for its diversity and balance.

1. Bring diversity to the plate

One of the most interesting principles to emerge from studies on the microbiota concerns the variety of plant-based foods.

Vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, seeds, nuts, aromatic herbs, and spices provide fibers and numerous substances used by the microbiota.

A varied diet allows different substrates to be offered to different microbial populations.

Some research has observed greater microbial diversity in people who consumed more than 30 types of plant-based foods per week compared to those who consumed much fewer.

It doesn’t have to become a strict new rule: it can simply be an incentive to vary what we bring to the table more.

2. Feed the bacteria with prebiotic fibers

Fibers are not only used by our body: some become nourishment for gut microorganisms.

Foods such as:

  • garlic;
  • onion;
  • leek;
  • artichoke;
  • chicory;
  • asparagus;
  • legumes;
  • some whole grains

contain fibers and compounds with prebiotic activity.

Their fermentation can promote the production of SCFAs, which are important for the gut environment and barrier.

3. Include fermented foods

Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, some fermented soy-based products, and other fermented foods can contribute to diet variety and provide microorganisms and metabolites derived from fermentation.

Not all fermented products necessarily contain live microorganisms at the time of consumption: processing and pasteurization can alter their presence.

Therefore, in this case too, quality matters and not just the word “fermented” on the label.

4. Eat mindfully

The gut is also affected by the state of the nervous system.

Stress and digestion are closely linked, and prolonged periods of tension can alter gut motility, visceral sensitivity, and eating habits.

Eating quickly, while working or continuously in front of a screen can also lead us to pay little attention to hunger, satiety, and the way we consume our meal.

A very simple habit can be to pause for a few moments before eating, breathe slowly, and truly dedicate time to the meal.

Mindful eating is not a therapy for intestinal diseases, but it can be a useful tool for recovering a more conscious relationship with food and body signals.

5. Respect the body’s rhythm

The gut and microbiota also follow biological rhythms linked to the alternation between day and night and the times we eat.

During the periods between meals, the Migrating Motor Complex (MMC) is activated, a specific motor activity that runs through the stomach and small intestine when we are not eating.

For this reason, it can be useful to avoid eating continuously throughout the day and to maintain, when compatible with individual needs, a certain regularity between meals and nighttime rest.

Extreme protocols or prolonged fasting are not necessarily required: regularity and quality of habits are often much more important.

A personalized approach to gut health

There is no ideal microbiota that is the same for everyone.

Age, lifestyle, diet, medications, existing conditions, and individual characteristics make a personalized approach necessary.

For this reason, especially in the presence of persistent bloating, altered bowel habits, pain, fatigue, or other recurring disorders, it is preferable to avoid standardized protocols and the indiscriminate use of probiotics and supplements.

The goal should be to understand which factors are influencing the individual’s balance and to intervene in a coordinated manner on diet, habits, and lifestyle.
